Since 1964 when the Mental Health Association in Niagara County, Inc. was formed by a citizens' committee to study the mental health needs of Niagara County, our mission has been to alleviate the stigma and public misunderstanding of mental illness, and to offer programs aimed at promoting good mental health and services to assist those who have mental illnesses.

Through programs such as Compeer Niagara and Legal Advocacy, people with mental or emotional disorders are benefiting by receiving the support services they so desperately require. The Niagara Self-Help Clearinghouse fills a need for those who may benefit from shared experiences, encouragement and information.

By providing educational conferences, workshops and materials, the MHA continues to actively encourage good mental health and to pursue other programs and services that will benefit the citizens of Niagara County.

In an advocacy role the MHA actively participates in the legislative process through close contact with our representatives in government, and closely examines pending legislation which will affect the welfare of persons with mental illnesses.
