Compeer Niagara for Youth

Children who are in need of a positive adult role model and a trusted friend are matched with trained and screened volunteers. Each child and his or her match spend time together throughout the month enjoying each other's company and having fun!

If you would like your child to participate in the Compeer program, you will need a referral to Compeer from your child's Mental Health service provider. (The form can be requested in the link to the right, however it must be filled out by your service provider.)

Activities

Another important component of Compeer is providing social interaction.

Compeer for Youth also offers two types of activities:

  1. "Friends for a Day" — an event for Compeer children in which they spend quality time building friendships with peers. These activities are usually two to three hours in length and are age appropriate. There is a different theme and location each month! Community volunteers assist the Compeer staff with these activities so parents/guardian are welcome to use the time as "respite" time. However, parents/guardians must bring their child to the activities and pick them up afterward.
  2. "Family Connections" — an event that provides Compeer families with the opportunity to explore a variety of interests while making memories as a family. There is no cost for families to attend the activities and the entire family is welcome! Family activities in the past have included trips to the Strong Museum, Buffalo Naval Park, Fantasy Island, and Bowling.

Education

Both parents and youth can benefit from the educational component of the Compeer program. The informative Compeer Niagara monthly newsletter, Family Support Connections, is sent to all families in the program. Also, Compeer periodically offers free educational workshops on anger management, resiliency, advocacy and transitioning. Additionally, parents and children are sometimes sponsored to attend conferences and trainings by other organizations.
